Freedom of speech

Freedom of speech – what is its limitation and how has it affected the world? Freedom of speech has always been expressed as one of the most basic rights of democracy. It has been expressed most often in the 21st century. It has changed the face of the earth as we know, it but has it been mistreated? There are many groups expressing their hate towards others and is this just, or should it be illegal? Many people think that there should be a limit to our freedom of speech; that we should have laws on what to say and write. We will look at first the positive parts about freedom of speech and then its negative parts.

Freedom of speech has really made our lives more civilized and respectful. We now have many basic human rights for minorities’ women and man. If people were not able to say what was right and what was wrong our entire human civilization would have never moved on. We can thank freedom of speech for me even writing this paper.

There are also many negative things about freedom of speech and the ways it has affected the world. For example, many wars have started from actions from speech. In WW2 where we saw much loss of human life was all done from actions from men who spoke a lot of hate. If restrictions on freedom of speech had been stricter back then it would not have happened. Although we have hate speech laws now there are many limits to them.

Now I hope I have spoken about both sides equally but in my conclusion I will express that freedom of speech has done in my opinion more good than bad.

I agree freedom of speech can be both positive and negative. Based on my personal experiences I have definitely have had my fair share of negative comments for expressing myself and being me. On the plus side I wouldnt be able to express myself in the first place. So it’s very complicated. I agree I think there should be some rules invovled with it. Freedom of Speech should be used to express yourself if it doesn’t hurt anyone else. HATE does not equal freedom of speech!!!!

On the intrinsic power of free speech to provoke a range of reactions, there is no dispute. It must remain a basic human right protected from censorship based upon fear or ignorance. Despite this obvious fact, we must also treat it as a priviledge. A tool to be wielded wisely and never to be infringed upon the right of others to do the same. It is a discussion worth having that will surely evolve as society changes.
