Weed is Harmless? Think Again

Glorifying the smoking of weed is shown in pictures of the 4/20 gathering at the Legislative Building as covered by the Winnipeg Free Press. Why aren’t there pictures of people that have been smoking for days? Weed is a drug plain and simple and it is a drug that screws and slows the mind so that you can’t react as you normally would do if you were straight. Take it from someone who is a ex weed smoker. The things I’m doing now I didn’t even think when I smoked weed.  Most days I couldn’t remember things from the day or week before. All I thought about was how I needed my weed to function; to wake up in the mornings, to clean my house, to live a life everyday. What does this show our kids? —that it is OK to do drugs? —that you need drugs to live a fulfilling life? Today I realize that I don’t need drugs to have a good life. I am going to school and I am a wonderful role model to my kids unlike what I was when I smoked weed.

    Dear Denise,

Well said and way to go! A lot of WAEC students have children and grandchildren and the powerful role-modeling you do does not go unnoticed!

I take it that you do not take Tylenol when you have a headache, drink coffee when you are exhausted and you definitely do not smoke cigarettes. Because acetaminophen, caffeine and nicotine are all drugs – and we wouldn’t want to teach our children drugs are to be accepted, right ?!

Marijuana is a drug, but like any and all drugs abuse or misuse can have negative affects. Marijuana relieves many terminally ill people of pain that many other medicines, including opiates (hey, heroin!), just can’t seem to battle. Recent studies by Harvard found that marijuana may actually fight lung cancer.

Tylenol can cause liver, kidney and other organ damage. Caffeine can cause dependency with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions. Alcohols negative affects, both short- and long-term, are much more destructive and detrimental to the consumer and those around than those associated with marijuana use. Oh, and we all know how great cigarettes are !!

Perhaps our negative stance should be against the misappropriation and abuse of marijuana, and not against marijuana itself. Weed may not be harmless, but it sure as hell is a lot less harmful than many socially accepted substances.

Denise, I used to get high a lot, but I quit. The reason is I was a student and my friends were doing it so often that it was affecting my school and my ambitions. I stopped three years later.
Every now and then I do smoke but only when I am going to watch a movie or play video games. When I do get high, my mind is either constantly racing thinking about everything and anything or its just out in space. That’s why I like watching movies. Either I get right into it or I start analyzing and deciphering how they could have done it better.
My boyfriend on the other hand used to have insomnia caused by being all stressed out from work, school, home, and cheating unreliable girlfriends. The only way he was able to sleep was to smoke marijuana. Now he doesn’t do it every night, just when he has a hard time sleeping. I believe that it is better than taking sleeping pills.
Well what ever the problem is, marijuana just like any other drug should not be abused.

I can see a pothead a mile away. Its also smells like a fart in a car. It’s on your clothing and it’s in your hair. Cheech and Chong are even more discreect about it. Take a lesson from them. That’s why they are cheech and chong. Take the pot smoking to a Cheech and Chong convention.

I believe that marijuana should not be abused by people. It was a shock to me that they legalized it for some chronic patients, but I guess it was a good thing for them especially if it is helping them with their illnesses. But I know of so many people that abuse the drug. Either they use it or sell it. Marijuana for me is a big no-no.

Marijuana can be addictive for some people. As a regular user I am what Seth Rogan calls ” a functioning stoner”. I don’t need it to do things….I do them anyways. it just makes things better . I go to work, school and play music while I’m stoned. It does not effect me in those things. I don’t freak out and get all sketchy like some people do, and to those people I say just don’t smoke it. If you don’t get high in front of your kids and don’t expose them to it, then they don’t really know anything about it. To all the smokers out there I say keep tokin’. We make the world a more mellow place one hoot at a time..

I agree with totally on what you said there. I too am a former pothead as you can say and that’s what I needed to function properly from day to day. I Quit smoking weed when I started school and me and my girlfriend had an agreement that we’D both quit when school started. And we did and it’s been a few months already smoke-free. Feels Great and Yes, it’s a No-No.

Everyone is always making a big stink about weed, but what about alcohol they sell in the store? You lose of control when drunk. And what about other drugs like ecstacy, cocaine or prescription drugs( Oxys, perks ect)? I personally feel that pot has a lesser effect on someone than these other drugs. Most of the accidents and horrible murderers are people who are either frunk or really messed up on some hard drugs. How many people were high when those things happened? I am a pot smoker and have been for the last 6 years. I work, I go to school, get good grades and function like any other person. There is a point where smoking pot is healthy and it’s not an addiction. There are many, many people who have jobs and homes and families and they smoke. I think if anything, they should make alcohol illegal. So many people have died from drinking too much or driving drunk and killing innocent victims. When some people drink they get violent and lose mind control. People kill best friends and even family members when drunk. There are many other drugs and other things that are still legal that are causing many problems with society and people should be looking at that.

    I agree completely with Philip.

I’m a stoner myself, and I definitely love smoking. There are days when I don’t smoke at all; there are days when I smoke all day. It’s been over two weeks since the last time I got high, and do I feel cravings? Not one bit. I don’t smoke weed in a closed environment where there are others that it may affect. I don’t smoke weed if I have an important job interview. I don’t smoke weed if I’m going to a class. I take care of myself and I have many other sources of happiness that weed cannot even compare to.

I have four beautiful nieces and nephews that I never smoke around. I don’t interact with them when I’m high. I don’t even have it on me if I’m around them. They don’t know anything about drugs and they’ll definitely not learn it from me (unless their mothers prefer I teach them the dangers and appropriate usage, of course). I’m a good role model for them and I’m proud of that.

It cures my pain if I have any, too! Which is a great plus. I support using it for medication. Anyone who has smoked would agree that most physical pain vanishes.

And marijuana truly does open your mind! Everything feels betters, everything tastes better, everything looks better. You get a calm, euphoric feeling, and the munchies are the best part! You don’t hear of people kicking the shit out of each other when they were high on weed right?

It seems most people find problems with inappropriate use of it. But if you can’t handle it, don’t smoke it, goes for any other thing at all. Moderation is the key to everything.

I don’t drink til I lose complete control. I don’t do any other illegal drugs. I stay in school. I perform tasks without it. I don’t crave it, and I’m a perfectly fine person.

I’m not judging anyone’s point of view, I’m just pointing out mine.
    Peace and love to all!

I don’t think smoking weed is the problem; look around at the bigger problem. It is the harder drugs on our streets. “CRACK CO-CAINE “. That’s the biggest problem on our streets, not weed. My friends who smoke weed get very hungry and sleepy. They don’t go out beating on people for money; they stay home.

I’d rather be smoking weed than doing other drugs..and weed is not a gateway drug. People have choices and whether they choose to do other drugs than that is their own stupidity. No-one has ever overdosed on smoking weed. The most you get is a mad craving for the munchies. :)

My canabis drive is very little from my prime days. Being into sports I choose to have “hoots” when watching or playing. I tend to learn from what I see and play a lot better. Being sober can probably do the same things for you, but I’ve noticed that it’s just not the same. As other people said it’s a drug; do not abuse it. It is naturally grown like the grass and trees we see and walk along everyday. The use of ganja is supported by it’s effects on illness. It helps with arthritis.

While a lot of you have valid points, the Liberal Party in Canada has recently begun lobbying for the legalization of weed. It’s only a matter of time until it comes here. It’s not that it’s bad or good. It’s all in how it is used. In the old days, well before Woodstock and such it was a simple medicine taken properly. It could rid people of pain, produce hunger for those with eating disorders, and there are new developments that say it reduces lung cancer and aging. I have a friend from Amsterdam who has been smoking pot since he was 9 yrs old and his doctor told him his lungs were surprisingly clear for some one that has smoked pot for almost 40 years. I used to get a few grams a week but I have cut down for my kids. Mind you if my kids came to me and asked what it was and if they could try it I’d much rather they come to me rather then finding it on their own where it could be mixed with something worse… In the long run I don’t see it being a big deal as long as one has control and moderation on their side. Heck a gram every now and then could really mellow out some of our more grouchy teachers. (you know who you are) lol Besides that I have seen a lot of suit and tie people at 420 as well as youth and other government approved job holding people.

I myself am a weed smoker, but I strictly keep it out of school. I do not bring it around the premises, nor do I smoke at all in the hours of school. I know what weed does to me, and a lot of the time I don’t like it when I have things to do. I used to smoke a ton before I started school, and now I keep it to occasional because I know that I have school to finish. Not everyone is the same, but I don’t believe that people should be using it just to keep themselves functioning throughout the day. And I say this, because I used to be that dependent on weed where I needed it all the time just to keep myself going. Now, I feel so much freer without the constant of always being high. Everyone has their own opinion, and nobody’s opinion is wrong in my belief.

Have you heard about somebody overdosing on marijiuana?
Quite frankly No! But I have heard of cases in which people overdose on Tylenol, Advil and the list will go on for miles about drugs that will have you fighting for your life after more than one or two.
I smoke weed and I can proudly say that, weed has helped me in a way that no other person or even a therapist can. When you smoke weed, it’s mainly about what you think about or what you desire to do. As for me, I read, write and even play basketball. My inspiration runs freely when I am high but never slows or sets me back from reaching my full academic achievement.
Weed is a therapist like no other.
