Weed is Harmless? Think Again

Glorifying the smoking of weed is shown in pictures of the 4/20 gathering at the Legislative Building as covered by the Winnipeg Free Press. Why aren’t there pictures of people that have been smoking for days? Weed is a drug plain and simple and it is a drug that screws and slows the mind so that you can’t react as you normally would do if you were straight. Take it from someone who is a ex weed smoker. The things I’m doing now I didn’t even think when I smoked weed.  Most days I couldn’t remember things from the day or week before. All I thought about was how I needed my weed to function; to wake up in the mornings, to clean my house, to live a life everyday. What does this show our kids? —that it is OK to do drugs? —that you need drugs to live a fulfilling life? Today I realize that I don’t need drugs to have a good life. I am going to school and I am a wonderful role model to my kids unlike what I was when I smoked weed.

    Dear Denise,

Well said and way to go! A lot of WAEC students have children and grandchildren and the powerful role-modeling you do does not go unnoticed!

I take it that you do not take Tylenol when you have a headache, drink coffee when you are exhausted and you definitely do not smoke cigarettes. Because acetaminophen, caffeine and nicotine are all drugs – and we wouldn’t want to teach our children drugs are to be accepted, right ?!

Marijuana is a drug, but like any and all drugs abuse or misuse can have negative affects. Marijuana relieves many terminally ill people of pain that many other medicines, including opiates (hey, heroin!), just can’t seem to battle. Recent studies by Harvard found that marijuana may actually fight lung cancer.

Tylenol can cause liver, kidney and other organ damage. Caffeine can cause dependency with a wide range of unpleasant physical and mental conditions. Alcohols negative affects, both short- and long-term, are much more destructive and detrimental to the consumer and those around than those associated with marijuana use. Oh, and we all know how great cigarettes are !!

Perhaps our negative stance should be against the misappropriation and abuse of marijuana, and not against marijuana itself. Weed may not be harmless, but it sure as hell is a lot less harmful than many socially accepted substances.
