Is it Safe?
That’s a question to which I would like an answer. As a young woman I don’t feel safe walking around down town on my own. Reading a story about a young women at the age of 16 who was sexually assaulted at gun point made me more worried about walking alone. The man took her into a small forest in a small town in Manitoba. He then hit her with his gun and brutally raped the young teen. When I hear about things like this happening I don’t feel so safe. Even though there are cops on duty I’ve still been jumped two times walking alone. To this day I still have to walk around alone which makes me worried about who I may run into. The only things I can do to prevent this is to always let someone know where I’m going and how long I may be. This just doesn’t seem like it’s enough because even after the fact I told someone where I was going I still ran into problems. I believe that the cops need to keep their eyes more open for things like this. That’s what they’re there for; to help and protect us. No one wants their loved ones or themselves to be hurt.

Hi Samantha,
You say “the cops need to keep their eyes more open for things like this”. Do you think they sometimes turn a blind eye, or that they don’t notice things they should?

Hello,
I Think You have a very strong point on this issue. I too myself do not loike walking around alone in downtown and yet i live in the downtown area, but i still don’t trust the police because i have been told from many of my friends they the cops have taken them into backlanes and beat them up, most occasions were for no reason. So maybe it’s not so good to rely on cops these days or to get more committed cops on the hour.

I strongly believe that there should be more police men on patrol but as a woman and a victim of past victimization. I took exta precautions and started to learn how to get out of situations and went out and learned how to defend myself. Yes, being careful is great but, you never know what will happen and empowering yourself gives you that extra confidence and kept me safe. Learn how to read people and your surroundings. Do everything in your power to keep YOU safe.
Bravo! Good post!

hello,
I really think that the city ain’t safe for men or women. I can understand where you’re coming from and that is a big question that hasn’t been answered yet by the community. I think there ain’t enough people that are brave enough to talk about this subject that really needs to be discussed. Great posting!!

This is so true. I have my girlfriend moving into Winnipeg from Steinbach and I live in the north end and that is a area I don’t even want her to be walking, even during the day because out in Steinbach she can walk around day or night and not have to worry. But here in Winnipeg it is a concern. I’m going to want her to be walking with me at least this way I know she won’t be grabbed to be raped for she is very beautiful. And knowing the sickos in this area of Winnipeg I just don’t trust it. Not to mention if something does happen the cops would probably not even do anything. What is the point of having cops when they don’t protect?

I hate downtown. I’m a small person so it’s hard for me to defend myself if the predators are bigger than me..
Downtown is like all nice during the day but when the evening rolls around it totally changes and it’s scary. I’ve been jumped 2 times as well in this area. I never walk around here at night anymore unless with a friend.
And it EVEN seems as if all those red coat patrols disappear at night too. They say they have cameras and everything but it seems like they don’t really do anything to help at the actual time something is happening.
I think there should be more guards and patrols on all over the city, never mind just downtown cause I know of SO MANY people that got jacked and stuff. I’ve even seen people get their purses jacked or like 10 guys on 1 guy.. I ABSOLUTELY HATE DOWNTOWN!!
