Overview

Math

Our math program will consist of various approaches of meeting each curricular outcome.  We will spend a few minutes each morning with a word problem which will develop problem solving strategies.  Hands on math activities will also be included daily, this will encourage the students to work as a group as well as speak French with each other while engaging in various strands of the math curriculum.

The math curriculum will be layered, meaning that each week we will be working on a different strand.  This will allow the students to come back to use skills they learned only a few weeks before.

Francais

Our French Language Arts is based on developing reading fluency and increasing writing skills.  The students will work in these areas daily while also working in a reading group with me once a week.  We will review the most common French sounds and will use these on a regular basis to help with reading and writing.  The students will also bring a copy of these sounds home.  As our French groups progress I will update this information with more specific examples of what the students are doing in class.

Speaking French is expected from all students.  They should speak French with each other, when working in class and when speaking to me.  The more effort the students put into this, the more success the will have in the program.

English

The ELA program in our room has been broken into several parts.  We have a reader’s workshop in which the students read a book of their choice and complete an activity to demonstrate reflection and comprehension.  There is also a writer’s workshop where the students have time to write on their own and create stories, poems, articles etc.  This year we will spend a few minutes several times a week to review basic grammar rules.  The students will be expected to apply what they are learning in their writing and editing.  We will be starting a novel study using the book Silverwing and I will include more information on this as we get into the book.
