Over the last few weeks the class and I have been working on developing thick questions. The students tried to write their own thick questions for the first time on Monday. This project has now gone home to be returned by Tuesday, February 17th (the note had originally said the 16th but I now realize this is a holiday). Some students have told me they can’t find the answer to their question. The intent is for the students to be creative and use many resources. Thick questions help us make personal connections and use what we know to help find the answer. We have been talking in class about ‘thinking and searching’. We are trying to move away from thin questions where the answer is right in front of us. This is a difficult task and I anticpate it will be a good challenge for each student.

Students – please share your questions by replying to this post.

This chapter was very exciting and we learned a lot about Shade’s character as well as many of the other bats. Some big decisions were made including that to save Shade’s life. The group for this chapter has chosen some key information from the chapter to share with you. Please look at their work and write a reflection on how you feel about the chapter, the characters, the novel so far or any personal experiences you are reminded of. This is a writing activity and you need to edit (spelling, grammar, upper case letters, periods etc.). This is due Thursday, November 20.

After reading the chapter in Silverwing called the Echo Chamber, three of the students from room 308 created a newspaper to tell us a bit about what we learned in the chapter.

Please look at their work and reflect on the chapter or their newspaper.  What did you think of while reading the chapter?  Do you agree with the information they decided to write about?  Would you have added anything?  Do you have different thoughts about the chapter after reading the newspaper?  What else are you thinking of after the chapter?

Mr. Strachan spent some time looking at our Tree Haven chapter poster.  He has found a few things about Silverwing as well.  Here is what he wrote, what do you think?

I found an interesting webpage located at…

http://www.silverwing.ca/covergallery.htm

It shows cover pictures of Silverwing published in other countries. When I saw this page I immediately began wondering why the pictures were all different? I thought, how do the pictures differ or how are the same? I wonder why they are all drawn in different ways in different countries. That’s a real puzzler!

The students in room 308 work collaboratively to create a summary and reflection of the second chapter in our novel Silverwing.

Using SMARTideas they first decided what the important parts of the chapter were.  Once we had finished finding the main ideas the students then had to decide how they were going show what they had learned.  With the choice of several options the class voted on creating a poster.  The students all chose different parts of the poster and quickly started!  In only a few days they had created a great poster which shows the main parts of the story, our favourite parts, the characters and a reflection.  Some students wrote while other created the background.  Everyone worked very well together.

I like this picture because the bat is small.

This picture is neat because it is on someone’s finger.

This picture is cool because it is a baby.

521926383_cd08625d96_m.jpgThis picture is very cool because it is huge and very fast and super strong.

The bat has a super long wing span and I think it is a teenage bat and I think it is flying very high in the sky.

This bat is awesome because it can fly in pitch black.
