We have been watching the Peregrine Falcons in Winnipeg and have been generating lots of thick questions. We don’t have all the answers to these questions so we have decided to write them down and see if we can start to find the answers.
Thursday evening post your question on the blog. Anytime on Friday or after please feel free to answer your question or a question another student asked. To answer the question leave a comment or reply to the comment where the question was written, so we can keep the questions and answers together. Keep checking the blog for the answers and don’t forget to contact community resources to help you.
Have fun watching the falcons!

100th Anniversary Reflection
Filed Under Homework | 21 Comments
As you know, yesterday was our 100th anniversary celebration. There were many activities and you were involved in most of them. Your inquiry projects all turned out great and it was neat to see them set up in the hall with all the other classes. The Fast Facts kept people guessing and hoping they knew the answers. I would like you to write a paragraph or two about how you feel about everything that went on, now that it is over. Talk about your inquiry project and what it was like to participate in such a large event that only happens every hundred years.

Germs!!
Filed Under Homework | 16 Comments
Today a scientist named Jamie came to show us the benefits of washing our hands with soap and water. We conducted two experiments which allowed us to see that just washing quickly with water is not enough. We also talked about when we should wash our hands and where we find germs.
Comment on this post and explain a bit about what we did for the experiment, what the results were and what you learned. You have already written a paragraph in French so this can just be a short summary of what you wrote.

French Comprehension
Filed Under Homework, News | Leave a Comment
Just a reminder that the French comprehension sheets are due each Wednesday. The students are to choose a Tumblebook in French or watch a French cartoon or tv program and complete a reflection sheet. I have changed the activity slightly this week to hopefully give the students a better opportunity to express the story in their own words and to share their thoughts.

Multiplication Quiz
Filed Under Homework | Leave a Comment
Satrting February 27th we will be having a multiplication quiz on Fridays (or Thursday if there is no school Friday). The students can study their multiplication facts by using their math bags that went home over the winter break or playing the games under the websites section of the blog. There is an expectation that the students spend enough time studying each week to show improvement on each quiz.

Tumblebook or French TV Program
Filed Under Homework | Leave a Comment
We do not send home reading books on the weekends but I would like to incorporate a reading and comprehension activity each week. During the week or over the weekend, I would like each student to either listen and read a French tumblebook or watch a French tv program (cartoon). Once they have finished this, they are asked to complete a story summary that includes a paragraph for the beginning, middle and end. The summary pages will be given out on Thursday and are due back the following Wednesday.

Silverwing Inquiry Project
Filed Under Homework, Silverwing Novel Study | 35 Comments
Over the last few weeks the class and I have been working on developing thick questions. The students tried to write their own thick questions for the first time on Monday. This project has now gone home to be returned by Tuesday, February 17th (the note had originally said the 16th but I now realize this is a holiday). Some students have told me they can’t find the answer to their question. The intent is for the students to be creative and use many resources. Thick questions help us make personal connections and use what we know to help find the answer. We have been talking in class about ‘thinking and searching’. We are trying to move away from thin questions where the answer is right in front of us. This is a difficult task and I anticpate it will be a good challenge for each student.
Students – please share your questions by replying to this post.

Community Project Rationale – due Monday, December 15
Filed Under Communities, Homework | 21 Comments
This week in class we started writing personal reflections on our chosen communities. The students then helped me come up with some activities and criteria for how to share the message of their community with the class. Part of the planning stage of this project is to write a rationale for why a specific project was chosen (for example a poster, powerpoint, podcast, brochure, story etc.).
I would like each of you to share what your project will be and include your reason for choosing it. While writing, I would like you to consider the following questions.
- Is your message clear?
- Can you express your feelings about the meaning of your community?
- Will your audience (the class) understand?
- Are you able to include enough description and detail in your chosen project?
Start by explaining what your project is and then write a paragraph about why you think it will be the best way to share your message. Please feel free to ask any questions you have at this time.

Have a nice ‘long’ weekend!
Filed Under Homework | 19 Comments
There will be no math question this weekend. A few weeks ago we started making a list of curious questions. The students listed any question they wanted to know the answer to. Soon we will be putting these questions together and start working with them. I would like all the students to submit one more question they are curious about. Comment on this post to give me your question and we will share them next week!
