Over the last few weeks the class and I have been working on developing thick questions. The students tried to write their own thick questions for the first time on Monday. This project has now gone home to be returned by Tuesday, February 17th (the note had originally said the 16th but I now realize this is a holiday). Some students have told me they can’t find the answer to their question. The intent is for the students to be creative and use many resources. Thick questions help us make personal connections and use what we know to help find the answer. We have been talking in class about ‘thinking and searching’. We are trying to move away from thin questions where the answer is right in front of us. This is a difficult task and I anticpate it will be a good challenge for each student.

Students – please share your questions by replying to this post.

If you’re having trouble finding your answer then think about how you could change your question. Can you still meet your needs by making changes? Don’t forget to check different sources, the internet is a great tool but not the only place we can look.

If you still cannot find your answer can you make an educated prediction or share some of your ideas with the information you have found?

Let me know how I can help.

Is there another place you could look rather than the internet?

  21. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:32 am

    Hi,

Can you simplify your last answer? What if you just left it as ‘Compare the changes of bats if they could not fly?’

  22. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:33 am

Remember you want just one question for now. These are all very interesting and would be good to look at as well but we want to be more specific. Work with one question like we did in class.

  23. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:34 am

Great question. Sometimes you don’t need to change your question a third time if it is already working for you. Try staying with your second question as it is more clear.

  24. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:36 am

Conservation is a great word. Can you tell me a bit about it means to you? Perhaps you can do this in your research and final product. Good work!

  25. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:36 am

It is good that you specified who ‘they’ is by indicating zoos in your final question. That makes your question easier to understand.

  26. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:38 am

I find it intersting that you went from Tree Haven to bat characteristics. How did you make that switch?

  27. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:39 am

This is a very interesting question. Can you makes your final question a bit more clear? What if you used the word ‘compare’ instead of discover changes, would that still meet your needs for your question?

  28. ehammond on February 5th, 2009 9:40 am

This is a really neat question but I don’t know who you are!

    First- What are Towers for?

    Then- Why are towers built?

Finally- What kind of towers are there in the world, and what are their purposes?

I thought that it would be easy at first, but it was not easy at all!!! So far I’ve discouvered the purpose of the Water Tower, and Lookout Tower, the CN (Canadian National)Tower. And the Richardson+CanWest Buldings. I’ve searched on the Internet & books, too.

You can’t look for Tree Haven online? But you
can look for albino bats online.I think that
it will be fun to research on the albino bats.

I could not find the answer to this question so it probably doesn’t happen much.

You could guess that they want to so they can be free but it doesn’t seem it happen.
