There are two questions again this week.  All students must complete the first one and the second is optional.  Please explain or show how you found your answer.  If you did the question on paper then write what you did.

Question 1

The Blah Network is showing some great new television shows.  Penrod’s new favourite is Wallpaper Weekly.  It starts at 9:15 A.M.  The show itself is 75 minutes, but there are two 2-minute commercials and four 30-second commercials in there as well.  What time is it over?

Question 2

Chuck delivers The Daily Blab in his neighbourhood.  It is collection day on Chuck’s paper route.  He got a $10 bill, a $1 bill and a nickel from Mr. Yawn.  He got a $5, two $1 bills and 4 quarters from Mrs. Yap.  He got two $5 bills and a 5 dimes from Ms. Yelp.  Who paid Chuck the most money?  How much?

The Blah Network is showing some great new television shows. Penrod’s new favorite is wallpaper weekly. It stats at 9:15 A.M. The show itself is 75 minutes, but there are two 2-minute commercials and four 30-second commercials in there as well. What time is it over? The show is over at 10:24.

I drew a number line on a piece of paper.

    10:24

  2. Anonymous on September 20th, 2008 9:32 am

There are 81 minutes in total.
    75+4=79+2=81

  3. rvo20 on September 20th, 2008 4:52 pm

Q1 There are 6 minutes of cammercials. 75 + 6 = 81 minutes. That is one hour and 21 minutes. The movie ends at 10:36.

  4. rvo21 on September 20th, 2008 8:30 pm

#1. The show starts at 9:15am. and the show is 75min. long. The commercials last 6 min(2×2min=4min 4×30sec=120sec=2min 4min+2min=6min). The show is 75min long plus 6min of commercials equals 81 min. 81 min is 1 hr and 21 min so the show ends at 10:36am ( 9:15+1hr=10:15+21mmin=10:36 )

    #2. Mr Yawn gave Chuck $11.05 ( $10.00+$1.00+$0.05=$11.05) Mrs. Yap gave $8.00.($5.00+ $1.00+ $1.00+ (4x$0.25)=$8.00). Ms.Yelp gave $10.50 ($5.00+ $5.00+ (5x$0.10)=$10.50). Mr. Yawn gave the most money so he wins!

  5. RW009 on September 21st, 2008 10:08 am

    The show starts at 9:15
    The show lasts 75 minutes
    9:15 + 1 hr = 10:15 +15 = 10:30

    Add 2 2 minute commercials = 10:34

    Add 4 30 second commercials
    30+30 = 60 seconds =1 minute commercial
    30+30=1 minute commercial

    10:34+1+1=10:36
    the show ends at 10:36

    Question 2
    Yawn= 10.00+1.00+.05=11.05
    Yap=5.00+1.00+1.00+0.25+0.25+0.25+0.25=8.00
    Yelp=5.00+5.00+0.50=10.50
Mr. Yawn payed the most at $11.05

  6. RV012 on September 21st, 2008 12:17 pm

    Mr. Yawn gave Chuck $10+$1+.05 $= $11.05
    Mrs. Yap gave $5+ two $1 (2$)+4 quarters(1$)= $8.00
    Mrs. Yelp gave 2 $5(10$)+5 dimes(.50 cents) = $10.50
Mr. Yawn gave Chuck the most money.
QUESTION #2,QUESTION #1 ON THE OTHER COMMENT.

  7. RV012 on September 21st, 2008 12:29 pm

If 1h15=show & (4min. + 2min.) = 6 minutes commercial time. This all adds up to 1h 21 min. of show time. If the show starts at 9:15, then 1h & 21 minutes later it will be 10:36.
    (9:15 + 1hour = 10:15 Then add the minutes (15 minutes + 21 minutes= 10:36).

  8. rv011 on September 21st, 2008 4:22 pm

    75+4+2=81 min
    9:15 to 10=45 min
    81-45=36min I used the numberline

the show ends at 10:36 am

  9. rv011 on September 21st, 2008 4:58 pm

    mr yawn 10+1+5c=11.05

    mrs yap 5+1+1+1=8.00

    ms yelp 5+5+50c=10.50

    Mr yawn paid the most

The first problem answer is 10:36am

  10. RV006 on September 22nd, 2008 7:34 pm

I wrote down the information about the question. Then I added up the minutes and seconds together. I got 81 minutes. I changed the 81 minutes to 1 hour and 21 minutes. I added 15 and 21 to get 36. I then added 9 hours and 1 hour to get 10 hours.

    The answer is 10:36

  11. RVO14 on September 23rd, 2008 8:38 am

    10.30 am
    9.15+4=9.19+2=9.21+69=10.30

  12. RV010 on September 23rd, 2008 4:46 pm

I got the anwser by adding 75+4=79 and
2 minutes came out to 81 minutes. I then
added 81 minutes to the 9:15 start time.
    81 minutes = 1 hour and 21 minutes.

    9:15 + 1 hour and 21 minutes = 10:36 finsh
    time.

  13. RV010 on September 23rd, 2008 5:12 pm

I got anwser by adding $10 + $1 dollar bill
    + nikkel = $11 5 cents.

  14. rv008 on September 24th, 2008 5:21 pm

Mr.yawn gave chuck the most money. He gave a total of $11.05.

  15. rv018 on September 24th, 2008 7:54 pm

It is at 9:15 you add 81 min,the show ends at 10:36.

  16. rv016 on September 25th, 2008 5:25 pm

    The show starts at 9:15.
The show lasts 75 minutes, which is 1 hour and 15 minutes. To know when the show is over, I added 1:15 to 9:15, so the show is over at 10:30.
The commercials are in the 75 minutes.

  17. RV017 on September 25th, 2008 6:41 pm

The show is over at 10:36

    75 minets =1:15

    2+2 minets =:04

    30+30= 1 minet and again + 2 minets

    9:15+ 1:15 + :04 + :02 =10:36.

  18. RVO22 on September 25th, 2008 8:41 pm

The show is over at 10:36 A.M.
75-60=15 so the show is 1:15 long. 2×2 minute commercials = 4 minutes. 4×30 second commercials =120 seconds divided by 60 seconds = 2 minutes.
    2 minutes + 4 minutes = 6 minutes of commercials. 1:15 + 0:06 = 1:21 minutes.
    9:15 A.M. +1:21 = 10:36 A.M.

  19. RVOO5 on September 25th, 2008 10:02 pm

Hi Mme this weeks question was a little hard.frist i started with the start time.then i added up for there.2+2=4 then i knew that 30+30+30+30=2 minuts .(these are the commercercials minuts.)then did 9:15+ one hour =10:15 then 10:15 +15 =10:30.but then i did commercials minuts so it won`d be 6 more minuts because of the commercials so it all adds up to…..10:36 and that is the answer!

  20. RVO13 on September 26th, 2008 7:57 am

    2*2=4min
    30+30+30+30=120sec (60 = 1min) 2mins
    75-4-2=69mins
    9:15 + 69= 10:24

The tv show ends at 10:24.

    Mr. Yawn. 10+1+.05= 11.05
    Mrs Yap 5+1+1+.25+.25+.25.25=8.00
    Ms. Yelp 5+5+.10+.10+.10+.10+.10=10.50

Mr. Yawn paid the most. It was $11.05.

  21. RVOO4 on September 26th, 2008 8:18 am

Hi mme this is how I did he question. I did 9:15 + an hour and 15 minutes = 10:30 10:30 + 4 minutes +10:34+ 2 minutes = 10:36. For the second question I think that Mr.yawn won because he gave in 11 dollers and 5 cents. Mrs. Yap gave him 8$ Chuck got 10$ and 50 cents from Mr. Yelp

  22. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 10:59 am

The number line is an excellent strategy. Can you show me what you added on the number line? Your answer is close but the time isn’t late enough :)

  23. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:02 am

There are 81 minutes in total. What time does the show end if there are that many minutes. Well done, can you add your blog name.

  24. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:16 am

I really like how you explained the answer by showing the minutes first. Did you use anything to help you do the addition? Good job!

  25. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:18 am

Your answers are great. You used a lot of detail to explain how you found the answers. Did you find either of these questions difficult?

  26. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:19 am

Great work! You did an excellent job of explaining your answers. Did you have any difficulties?

  27. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:27 am

Mr. Yawn did give Chuck the most money. I like that you showed us how you found the different amounts. Did you do all the addition in your head or did you write it down?

  28. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:28 am

I really like how you broke up the hours and minutes and added it to 9:15 in two parts. Did you have any difficulties with this question?

  29. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:32 am

You showed addition and subtraction in your answer. Well done. How did you know to add 4 and 2 to 75?

  30. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:36 am

You did a great job showing your answer. Can we work on writing money in the proper way? For example to show 11.05 it would be $11.05 in English or 11,05$ in French. When there are no dollars it is the same $0.05 in English and 0,05 in French. Give it a try!

  31. ehammond on September 26th, 2008 11:41 am

It is very helpful to write down all the information from the question so you know what is being asked. I like how you broke the time apart to add it. Did you have a hard time trying to explain it?

  32. RV012 on September 26th, 2008 5:27 pm

No I did not have any troubles.

  33. RV012 on September 26th, 2008 5:30 pm

I wrote it down on a piece of paper.

  34. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:17 pm

Is your answer 10:30? I see how you did you addition and it looks great. I am just wondering why you chose to add 69 at the end. Consider the commercials as extra time added to the 75 minute show.

  35. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:18 pm

You did a great job explaining your answer. Why did you add four and two? Good work.

  36. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:19 pm

You’re right with the $11.05 but who gave the most money? How did you find out that $11.05 was the most?

  37. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:21 pm

That’s the right answer. Well done. Can you explain how you came to your total of $11.05 and how you know it was the most money?

  38. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:22 pm

That’s right, the show does end at 10:36. How did you know to add 81 minutes? Did you do anything to help do the addition?

  39. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:23 pm

Adding one hour and fifteen minutes would give you 10:30, well done. What if the commercials are added to the 75 minutes of the show, what time would it be over?

  40. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:24 pm

I really like how you found your answer, it is very easy to see. Can you write a final sentence to give your answer in words? Good work!

  41. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:25 pm

That is a great answer, I really like how you showed each step. Bravo! Did you need anything to help you with the addition and subtraction? Can you write a final sentence for your answer?

  42. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:27 pm

For a hard question you did a great job. I especially like how you did the question in different parts to help. By adding one hour and then fifteen minutes you showed a great addition strategy. Well done!

  43. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:29 pm

I can easily see how came to your answer for both questions. For the first question I see that you subtracted the commercials from the total time of the show. What if you added the total time of the show and the commercials and then added them to the start time? How would that change the end time? You were right with the second question and I really like how you wrote a final sentence. Good work!

  44. ehammond on September 27th, 2008 1:30 pm

Those are both great answers and I like how you explained them. Did you find them difficult at all, or did you use any strategies to help with the addition? Great work.

  45. rv018 on September 28th, 2008 11:21 am

I added the show min and the com min too so I had 81.

  46. RV018 on September 28th, 2008 11:39 am

Question 2: Mr. Yawn gave the most $11.05.

  47. rvo17 on September 28th, 2008 7:32 pm

the final answer in words is at the start.
    Do you need more?

  48. RVO14 on September 29th, 2008 1:36 pm

becaese after you have 69 more minutes in the show.

  49. ehammond on September 29th, 2008 5:02 pm

I must have missed that the first time. Thanks!

  50. RV019 on September 29th, 2008 6:48 pm

    The show ends at 10:36. I added 6 so that’s 81 then, I took away 60 that’s 21. Now it would
    be 10:15. Next, I took away 21, so that’s 10:36.
    10:36

  51. RVOO5 on October 1st, 2008 4:23 pm

    THANK YOU!

  52. RVOO4 on October 2nd, 2008 6:51 am

I found the the blah network one harder then the other one and i really like the blog.

  53. RV020 on October 10th, 2008 9:37 pm

I did it in my haed .
