Learning About Birds
Kindergarten children embarked on an artistic journey learning about birds. The book, The Ugly Duckling, sparked many questions and wonderings. Sammy Swan, a beautiful puppet, visited the class to help answer questions. Using movement and soft music, the children acted out the life cycle of the ugly duckling. A collection of feathers, nests and non-fiction books invited children to scientific exploration. Students represented their learnings by looking at and painting an ostrich feather, creating multi-media nests with pastels, yarn and feathers and looking carefully at bird models and drawing what they see. Favorite stories included Owl Babies, Edward the Emu and The Wishing Bird. The children especially enjoyed the story Rainbow Bird. Children drew a bird on acetate. They painted the bird using acrylic paints which were later displayed on the class window. Children created Rainbow Bird sculptures using feathers and quick dry clay.
