Fabulous February!

Room 20 is excited to have Learning Through the Arts artist Cathy Woods in our classroom.  Students are learning about visual art and how it can be a useful method of showing what they have learned.

Room 20 has been discussing Healthy Living.  We have been learning about healthy foods and activities that keep our bodies and minds healthy.  Please plan to attend the Monday Morning Assembly on Monday, February 11 and Tuesday, February 19 when Room 20 presents on Healthy Living for the entire school community!

I hope the homework is going well.  Please remember if you don’t have time to complete the homework journal with your child, that it is a good idea for them to engage in reading activities every night.  Please have you child read to you for 15-20 minutes and read to them to model how good reading sounds.

Keep warm!

Animal Inquiry

Room 20 is continuing our Animal Inquiry.  Students have asked questions, researched, asked deeper questions and are now planning and preparing to present their learning.

Camp Cedarwood

The grade 5 & 6′s of Mulvey School attended Camp Cedarwood from March 5-7. Weather conditions were ideal and all participants had a blast!! Activities included geocaching, cross country skiing, campfires, hayrides, crafts, karaoke, snowshoeing & survival games to name a few.

We love nature!!!

Room 20 has been loving learning all about nature! We collected tons of natural artifacts when we were on our fieldtrip to Beaudry Park and have been using them to create beautiful pieces of art. We took out time to really observe the pieces and asked ourselves questions like….

If I slow down and take my time to look will I observe anything new and interesting?

What do I see with a magnifying glass that I can’t see without?

Do I make better observations when it is quiet and there are no dispruptions?

After taking time to study their piece, everyone began to sketch. The results were beautiful!!

Check out the pictures of the students hard at work.

Beaudry Park!!!!

Room 20 went to Beaudry Park on October 19th. We decided as a class that it was the best fieldtrip that many of us had ever been on. It is a beautiful park and what an amazing way to start our inquiry journey this year! We wrote down many questions and observations as we were exploring.

Some of the students worked together to write their thoughts about our day.

Room 20 went on a fieldtrip to Beaudry Park! We spent five hours there in total, three hours hiking, one hour drawing and one hour for lunch.

On our hike we saw many interesting things like a frog, bald eagle, beaver dams, white tail deer, crows, bunnies, geese, fish, insects and stick bugs. We also saw a bee hive. We saw many fallen trees and that why we need to keep our Canadian habitats clean, happy and healthy.

On our hike, some of the students in Room 20 felt very energized because we were surrounded by trees that gave us oxygen. It is good for you to go to parks to get some fresh air and energy.

Even though it was a cold and windy day, the students in Room 20 had lots of fun hiking. Then after that, we got some time to draw or write in our inquiry journals. We were supposed to draw and write about our surroundings.

Then it was lunch. We had a hot dog roast with marshmallows, juice boxes, rice krispie squares and apples. For some students it was their first time having a hot dog roast.

Room 20 had a very awesome time at Beaudry Park. We hope you can go to Beaudry Park, just like we did!!!

Math Investigation in Room 20

Room 20 has been learning about a new kind of Mathematics. We have been working in small groups and solving word problems surrounded around math. This is called a math investigation. During our work, we have discussed how important it is to communicate with group members and work cooperatively to figure out the solution. We are also learning how important it is to show our work with numbers, sentences, and pictures, and that the journey to figure out the solution is a very important part of math. It has been a lot of work…but very exciting and has become a lot of fun!

Yoga at Mulvey

Mulvey School has been very fortunate to recieve a 10 session yoga grant from Moksha Yoga. Students in room 20 will learn stretching and relaxation techniques that can be applied to their daily active lives.

Literacy Through Daily 5

Room 20 has been working on our school theme…Reading Counts Everywhere!  We have been working on this theme by using our reading skills  both in the classroom, home reading, and environmental reading. These are some pictures of our class enjoying and relaxing during our Daily 5 – Read to Self.
