iPad Helpers
iPads are a multi-media, multi-use tool that can be used in the classroom to enhance student learning in a variety of ways.
Navigating the world of “Apps” and features can be overwhelming…you might have many questions:
- Is this App age appropriate?
- What makes an App suitable for education?
- What should I look out for when choosing apps?
- How can students use the built-in features to support their learning?
Try to imagine apps on a continuum: Consume – Collaborate – Create. When you are looking at an app, keep the target learning intents in mind, and use your professional judgement. Each app may be in a specific area, or more that one area on the continuum.
To help figure out what will be the most effective way to use the built-in features and apps in the classroom, here are some helpful links to support your students’ learning with iPads.
Criteria for judging if an app is appropriate:

(Note: The checklist at the bottom of this page suggests that an app for education should be free; many useful apps are free, but there are also paid apps that might be considered if they will support student learning)

(Note: Sometimes a free version is a great way to explore an app and determine if an upgrade to a paid or “pro” version would be appropriate!)

(Note: there are lots of sites that evaluate apps for education, use your own good judgement on which sites are pedagogically sound, and have best practice in mind.)
