The WRHA has asked us to send a letter home to parents regarding the H1N1 virus.  Please take the time to download and read the document by clicking the link below:

H1N1 and Update Sept 28, 2009 (.pdf format)

The highlights of the letter include how parents can help limit the spread of the virus:

“…There are several important things that you can do to help stop the spread of influenza:

  1. Please keep your child at home if he or she is sick, until he or she is better.
  2. Encourage your child to wash his or her hands often, especially before eating, or after coughing or sneezing into their hands.
  3. If your child has a cough, encourage him or her to cover his or her cough with a tissue, or to cough into his or her sleeve.
  4. If your child is staying at home because of an illness, please contact the staff at your school to let them know why your child is absent, and tell the staff what symptoms your child is experiencing (symptoms of influenza include cough, fever, fatigue, muscle aches, sore throat, vomiting or diarrhea). “

More information is available in the letter.

Federal and Provincial Governments Invest in Elmwood’s Recreational Infrastructure

Winnipeg, Manitoba – Elmwood High School will move forward with the refurbishing of their outdoor track and field facility, thanks to funding from the federal and provincial governments.

Today, the Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Provencher, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, and the Honourable Ron Lemieux, Manitoba Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation and Member of the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for La Verendrye, announced funding for renovations that will create jobs in Winnipeg.

“Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government is creating jobs and building stronger communities,” said Minister Toews.  “The refurbished Elmwood High School track and field will better serve local students now and in the future.”

“This new state of the art track along with upgrades to the football field will enhance training and competitive opportunities for the students of Elmwood High School,” said Minister Lemieux.  “Shovel ready projects such as this are also helping to create jobs in Manitoba.”

The total cost of the project is $425,000.  Funding of $140,250 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.  The Province of Manitoba is contributing $100,000.

Under the project, Elmwood High School will refurbish the outdoor track and field facility and improve the quality of the football field.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Winnipeg School Division, I would like to express how pleased we are to learn that the Federal and Provincial Governments have approved funding to support the Track and Football/Soccer field facility upgrade project at Elmwood High School,”
said Anthony Ramos, Chair of the Board.  “The school community will benefit from these upgrades for years to come.”

The Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program will invest $500 million in recreational facilities across Canada over a two-year period.
It will provide a temporary economic stimulus that will help reduce the impacts of the global recession while renewing, upgrading and expanding recreational infrastructure in Canadian communities.

Today’s announcement continues the important steps the Province of Manitoba is taking to support economic growth by investing $1.6 billion this year into infrastructure to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and renew the province’s roads, schools, health facilities, and water treatment facilities.

WSD – School Announcement Regarding H1N1 Virus

School Happenings Comments Off

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Recently there have been reports of a number of cases of H1N1 in the province and as you likely know the World Health Organization has now declared the H1N1 outbreak a pandemic.

I am writing to ask your assistance in helping to keep your child/children and the rest our school community well.

Here are some ways you can do that:

Wash hands: Teach your child to wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

Elbows: Teach your child to cough or sneeze into the inside of the elbow. Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

Eyes, nose, mouth: Teach your child to avoid touching his/her eyes, nose or mouth as germs or viruses can transfer from the hands into the body in this way.

Safety zone: Teach your child to stay at least three feet away from anyone who is sick.

Please keep children who are sick at home. Do not send them to school. They should not be around other people until they are better.

If you have questions, please contact your healthcare provider. For more information, contact Health Links 788-8200 or visit the Manitoba Health website: www.gov.mb.ca/health

 Sincerely,

Mike Babb

Principal
