A small group of grade 3 students have been busy writing poems. They wrote some poems about the colors in nature. These poems have been modelled after the poem “Choose a Color” by Jacqueline Sweeney.

Grade 6 Readers – More Poetry

Grade 6 6 Comments »

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on our last podcast, Boa Constrictor. We love the humorous poems of Shel Silverstein and have recorded two more poems for your listening pleasure.

The first one is called “The Meehoo with An Exactlywatt”. See what happens when the Meehoo knocks on the door. Very funny poem.

The second poem is called “Poemsicle”. In this poem, a young author plays with words but then, something happens to him. Listen to find out!

Geocaching

Geocaching, Performing Arts 9 Comments »

Some students at Dufferin School are part of a Geocaching Club that meets during Performing Arts time.

Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game in which the participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook and “treasure,” usually toys or trinkets of little value.

For the traditional geocache, a geocacher will place a waterproof container, containing a log book (with pen or pencil) and trinkets or some sort of treasures, then note the cache’s coordinates. These coordinates, along with other details of the location, are posted on a website. Other geocachers obtain the coordinates from the Internet and seek out the cache using their GPS handheld receivers. The finding geocachers record their exploits in the logbook and online. Geocachers are free to take objects from the cache in exchange for leaving something of similar or higher value, so there is a treasure for the next person to find.

Dufferin students created travel bugs which are objects that are moved from cache to cache and whose travels may be logged and followed online. The students identified different goals for their travel bugs. Some are going to travel to Las Vegas and others are going to travel to New York and then travel back to Winnipeg.

Students released their travel bugs last week by hiding them in a cache. These travel bugs were picked up by another geocacher and are now on the move. Stay tuned as the Geocaching Club gives updates on the locations of their travel bugs.

Rules about Blogging

Rules of Blogging No Comments »

Well we have got the Dufferin Blog Site up and running. Teacher and students have begun to post their work and are replying to each other. This blog site is an excellent forum for the sharing of ideas with each other.

Just a few reminders about the rules of blogging:

1) Never use your real name. Always use a user name – like the name of an animal or a flower. Do not give any details about yourself like where you live, your email or phone number. Remember the rules of internet safety.

2) Use proper language and punctuation when writing a post. Please remember to capitalize sentences and use punctuation. Whatever you write should be clear and easy to understand. If it is not, you may be asked to edit your comment.

3) Make sure that your comment uses appropriate language. Whatever you write should be appropriate to publish in a newspaper. Make sure that you would be comfortable with your teacher or the principal reading it.

4) All comments and posts are approved by a moderator. The moderater will not post comments that use inappropriate language.

5) Your comments should stay on topic.  Make sure that what you say in your comment relates to the post.  Comments that are off topic or have extra unnecessary details are called fluff. No fluff please!

Enjoy blogging!

I Love To Read Month

I Love To Read Month 23 Comments »

Everyone knows that February is I Love To Read Month. Dufferin School has been celebrating I Love To Read Month with special guest readers – Ronald McDonald and Joe McClellan. We also have a few contests to get everyone reading.

Students who are “caught reading” by an adult will get a ticket to put into a book draw! Also, we have a competition between classrooms to see which classroom can read the most books. Each classroom is decorating their door with little hearts that each say the name of a book that someone has read.

What books are you reading for I Love To Read Month? Let us know.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Grade 4 2 Comments »

Today some grade 4 students had a discussion about the three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle.  They all agreed that we need to do our part to reduce the amount of waste that we generate, reuse items more than once and to recycle things instead of putting them in the garbage.

What ideas do you have for ways to reduce, reuse or recycle?

Static Electricity

Some students are reading the book “Felicity Discovers Electricity”. It is a story about a girl named Felicity who tries some experiments with static electricity. The student readers decided to try out some of the experiments. It was a very “hair raising” experience!

Sight Words

Sight Words 4 Comments »

Here is something I created for any student who would like to practice their basic sight words. Sight words are those little words that appear in the books and stories we read every day. Once you know them all, you will be a quicker and smoother reader! I will be adding more lists in the future
