I’m expecting half-page to full-page in point-form or paragraph.

Social Studies Test Review Notes

Here’s the notes we took today for the Social Studies test on Monday or Tuesday (Depending on which home room the kids are in)…

Social Studies Test Review

1)Nedicthic Period
-The period in which humans developed stone tools.
2)How To Do Stuff
- carbon dating, rocks (rubidium, potassium, etc) archives, dendrochronology, fossils.
*-Explain how to carbon and other elements decay at a constant rate and how scientists use that information to date things.
3) Evolution
- Charles Darwin (father “of biology, founded theory of evolution)
–natural selection(survival of the fittest gene)
–genetic mutation.
- human evolution
4)Early Hominids and Humans
-Hominids (the name given to the family of an ape-like species from which humans evolved)
-Hominids we studied: Australopithecus, Homo Erectus, Neanderthal, Homo Sapiens (Cro Magnon Man).
-Survival of early humans (Homo Sapiens)

Test Set-up:
1. Word Match
2. Multiple Choice
3. Long Answer
For long answer, they will be writing approx. half a page to a full page on TWO out of the following THREE topics:
-The Theory of Evolution (Its history, how it works, how it applies to all life)
-Human Evolution (How we evolved from early hominids, types of hominids we covered, key discoveries)
-Scientific Methods of Dating – Ways in which scientists know how old things are.

For the long answer, I don’t want a whole bunch of definitions of terms. I am looking for understanding of the concepts in their own language. They can use drawings or charts, they can use point form, whatever. What’s important for me is that they can explain these concepts as if they were teaching them to someone else.

Churchill Clothing Drive

Dear Parents,
Hey all! As you may or may not be aware of, the UNESCO group at Churchill (which some of your children are a part of) is heading up a clothing drive for people in need. We’re emphasizing winter clothing (coats, mitts, scarves and the like – please, no footwear or socks) but it we’ll accept other clothing as well. If you have anything at home that you’d like to donate, please drop it off in the Flex room or have your child bring it in.
We’d ideally like to have a heap of clothing by the end of the week, so please bring it in ASAP.
Thanks,
Dave
