Flex Update: November 8th, 2009

We are continuing our World Cities projects and some groups are ready to start building. As such, this is another call for building materials, from large items like chicken wire to small items such as cereal boxes, pop bottles, juice containers, and basically anything else that could contribute to a skyline.

If these projects come together as well as the students are imagining, they will look fantastic.

LOOKING AHEAD:

Parent-teacher conferences will be held November 26th. We like to meet with all of the parents if possible.

peaceLEARNERS benefit concert will be held on November 26th at the Park Theatre. This is a group of young humanitarians who are working to build a school in Sri Lanka. Your children are welcome to join this group if interested, and the whole Riverview community is welcome to attend the event. Dave and I are two of the teachers involved in this project. It should be a fun night.

Flex students usually volunteer for Winnipeg harvest in December handing out Christmas hampers. Looking for some feedback here in terms of who would be interested in driving, and whether or not you would like your child to be involved in this. It has been a very big eye opener for some in the past, and the students have wanted to continue to volunteer after all the packages had been doled out.

Twice a year we have a flex family potluck, one in December and one in June. It is always a nice gathering and a chance to visit with the families of the students in flex. Again, I’m looking for feedback in terms of interest. There is no point in planning the potluck if interest is lacking. The potluck is typically held on the last week of school before the break, but we could change that if need be.

With thanks for your support, looking forward to seeing you all soon,

Tanis

Thanks,
Tanis and Dave

Flex Update, October 20th, 2009

Hey there,

Two things:

1) – Outing

As most of you know, we are planning another outing for Wednesday, October 28th to Fort Whyte. As best I can recall at this moment, the day runs from 10:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. We will be outside for a chunk of the day, so all of us must be dressed for the weather. I am looking forward to what may be our last outside outing until winter camp in March.

Dave and I have a preliminary list of parent drivers. If you are able to drive, can you let us know again (sorry).

2) – World Cities Integrated Project

We are having a great year this year in Flex and are soon to embark on one of our integrated units for the year. Our World Cities project will integrate the four core subject areas as we are studying World Cities in Social Studies, Structures in Science, Area and Shape and Space in Math, and Expository writing in English. Your daughter or son may be coming home at the end of the school day over the next little while looking for things to build their city with (just to forewarn you). You are all welcome to come in and be a part of the adventure!

The grade 7s and Dave and I had a great time this afternoon viewing Where the Wild Things Are. The movie reminded me of our classroom, some of our students, and the imagination of youth.

Let the Wild Rumpus begin!

Field Trip Postponed

Hello everyone!

Unfortunately we had to cancel tomorrow’s field trip to the corn maze. According to the people who run it, the maze closes if it rains. Due to the forecast for tomorrow, we felt our parent volunteer drivers would prefer a cancellation now rather than tomorrow morning.
The good new is, however, that we had an amazing amount of support from our parents. Thank you everyone who volunteered to drive! We have rescheduled the Corn Maze trip for next Wednesday the 14th. If anyone can drive, please let us know. As well, we are going to the Fort Whyte Centre on the 28th of this month. If we have enough drivers for that trip, the cost per student is only $1.75!

Thanks again,

Dave and Tanis

Corn Maze Thursday!

Hey all! Just a reminder that our trip to the Corn Maze is on Thursday. Hopefully it won’t rain, but the forecast is for cold weather. Please make sure your son/daughter has a packed lunch for that day and is dressed for the weather. It’s better to overdress than underdress. It might be quite muddy out there, so rubber boots would be a huge advantage. If your child has not returned his/her permission form with money, please make sure these are in by tomorrow (Wednesday).
Thanks,
Dave

Drivers Wanted…

Hey there!

We are currently in the planning phases of two excursions for the month of October.

1) Corn Maze
Date: October 8th
Cost: $8.00

2) Fort Whyte
Date: October 27th
Cost: $5.00

We are in desperate need of drivers as we’d like to avoid having to pay for transportation.
Are any of you available to help out?

Come out and join in the fun!

Thanks,
Tanis
