Argyle Alternative High School (Argyle) is a school located in the inner-city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada near the newly developed Waterfront Drive. We are currently working on the development of an Outdoor Educational Classroom. The project is beautifying the community, building community relationships and establishing partnerships.
The outdoor classroom is providing educational information to students, the community, and general public regarding topics that include Aboriginal culture, sustainability, environmental issues and concerns, mining, and renewable sources of energy.
This blog site is designed to discuss topics pertaining to Argyle’s Outdoor Educational Classroom.
Please refer to Argyle’s web site at www.argylealternative.org for further information on the Outdoor Educational Classroom.
Argyle had the first stand alone wind turbine/solar system installed at a school in Manitoba.
There is also two weather stations on top of the school. Information (temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure) is relayed into the school.

Indoor Ecosystem in Environmental Science Classroom.

This Blog site is awesome.
How long did it take to get the wind turbine to be set up in the school?
How did you build your indoor ecosystem?
When I was there I saw your wind turbine and I was just wondering if there wasn’t enough wind how do you get your electricty for the classroom.
comment: I love how your school is succeeding with your ways to help the enviroment.
Hi, I have a question for you. How did you come up with getting all these science stuff?
Hey, I had a great time at your school. There are many new and different things to me at your school that interest me. So far it seems you have many different programs/projects/and observations going. My question is what is your next plan, as in what is your next big project/ or idea for your school? And what is the purpose of it?
Hello, my name is Andre and I am from Elmwood High School, and I am here to ask you some questions. Would you ever get a new and bigger wind turbine? What are your goals with Argyle school? Would you ever share your indoor ecosystem with other schools?
Thank you for letting us come and visit your school. Also congratulations to your school and all that you have accomplished.
Andre (Elmwood High School)
cool web site.
What are some of the projects you do in your school?
I like the appearance of your school from the outside!
How much maintenance does your indoor ecosystem require?
Is most of your classes about helping the enviroment and if so, how many are there?
THIS SITE IS AWESOME!!!!
We have:
-composting systems
-digital sign that relays environmental messages
-outdoor classroom with plants, sculpture, shrubs, geological speciments etc.
-wind turbine and solar panel
Our school has courses like all other high schools including physics, chemistry, mathematics, Language Arts, Art, History, Video Production, Biology, Environmental Studies etc.
Our indoor ecosystem must be cleaned (change water, add water), and crickets are added as food for the frogs.
If there is not enough energy in the battery we use conventional energy to power our hydroponics and water culture systems.
We want to make learning fun for students and decided to purchase equipment that would help in this process.
The concept for the installation of a wind turbine at Argyle Alternative High School started several years ago and was completed in November, 2008.
Students and staff are always coming up with new ideas for Argyle’s Outdoor Educational Classroom. We will continue to develop new activities for the classroom.
We don’t have any current plans to get a bigger wind turbine. Our goals are to continue to expand the Outdoor Classroom, and to serve as an example for sustainable developmental practices. We currently share our ecosystem through our web and blog sites, and through school visits.
The outdoor classroom is a step in the right direction that everyone should not hesitate to follow.
